Power Rankings Overview: RSL drops on charts following dip in form

·

Kreg Asay, Power Rankings wizard, compiled these excellent stats once again. It's always fascinating to see how these rankings chance, whether you put weight in the opinions or not. If I had my say, we'd always be number 1. Anyway, read on. Thanks again, Kreg!

Power Rankings are up for another week.  There are plenty of changes on the weekly average table, and one change on the season average table.

It's rather interesting to note the large gap between Vancouver (7th) and Columbus; while Vancouver's ranking was fairly consistent between 6th and 8th place, Columbus' position ranged between 7th and 12th.  Smaller gaps exist between Colorado (12th) and New England (13th), and Montreal (15th) and Portland (16th) for similar reasons.  Evidently some of the sites viewed the results from certain teams higher than others; New York tied Toronto and held their position at 3rd, while Seattle tied New England, but fell 2 places.

The most consistent site once again was SBNation.com where the biggest change from week 14 was Chicago rising 2 positions.  The most inconsistent was Goal.com with no less than 4 teams moving 3 or more positions!

Firsts and Lasts

RSL has been ranked #1 for a total of 6 weeks. SKC was in first for 5 weeks, and SJE for 4.

TFC has been 19th for a total of 10 weeks, Montreal held last place for 2 weeks, Chivas Philly and Dallas 1 each.

Only one team changed position on the Season Average table, San Jose displaced Seattle for 3rd place.  The table is getting less spread out now from last month where gaps of 2-3 were common.  Currently the biggest gaps are 2 between Seattle (4th) and New York (6th), and Dallas (12th) and Columbus (13th).

Trends to watch

If team form continues the gap between Seattle and NY will continue to shrink, although NY is unlikely to pass the Sounders before August.  Seattle started the season with an average place of 3.5 (tied with LAG for week 1); their highest average was 2.88 in week 3 (2nd place), and they've been slowly falling ever since.  The reason they're still placed 4th overall is their good form in the early season, but like LA and Dallas if the bad form continues they will continue to fall in the table, though it looks very unlikely that they'll leave the top 10 by the end of the season.

New York has had a meteoric rise going from an average of 12th place in week 1 to a 6.48 average in week 15.  The only week their average fell was in week 2 after their loss to RSL.  They should pass Seattle in late July or early August unless either team changes form.

San Jose also resembled a rocket on the charts going from a 10.25 ave. in week 1 to 4.47 this week!  They should pass SKC by the end of July barring any changes in form for either team.

Columbus also seems likely to pass Dallas by August barring any collapse by the Crew, or exceptional run by the Texans.  The remainder of the table should see some small changes; DC will likely pass Vancouver and Houston, but will be hard pressed to pass New York or reach the level of San Jose and RSL.

Firsts and Lasts

RSL has held the top spot on the season table for a total of 13 weeks (with week 7 tied with SKC).  SKC held #1 for 3 weeks (again with W7 tied with RSL).

Montreal and Toronto have been in 19th for 7 weeks each; however Montreal has steadily risen, while Toronto may have dug a hole too deep to get out of at this point in the season.  If they continue to improve they may be able to pass the Union, but it will take a consistent effort.
