This morning was promising to be as slow as any other until some wonderful news came down the pipeline (er, well, the club revealed it on Twitter and perhaps elsewhere.)
The one and only Ned Grabavoy has officially agreed terms with Real Salt Lake, and while the terms haven't quite been revealed (I'm interested to know what the hold-ups were) it's great news that we are (officially, finally) keeping him.
We've also agreed terms with Eduardo "Lalo" Fernandez, a young goalkeeper who came out of the Grande Sports World complex in Arizona as part of the RSL-AZ Academy. He'd previously agreed to attend University of Wisconsin, then he moved to C.A. Peñarol in Uruguay, and now he's agreed terms with us — what a year it must be for the lad.
Let's zoom back briefly to a piece I wrote in December about our roster. I'd listed five players as in discussions, and at least two of those have now come to amicable closures: Fabian Espindola, whom Garth Lagerwey has repeatedly emphasized is staying with the team, and Ned Grabavoy, who was revealed today.
This leaves Yordany Alvarez, Cody Arnoux and Paulo Jr. remaining from that list, and while I can't recall with absolute certainty, I do think I remember something about (vague enough, eh?) Arnoux definitely staying. I could well be wrong on that one, mind you. We still haven't had any definitive news on Paulo Jr. and Yordany Alvarez, and I suspect that's because they're both players we've had loaned to us.
Ah, decisions. I don't envy the position of the management, but I do quite expect that they'll make the right choices for the team.
At any rate, this puts us on the right track for our 2012 season. The draft's coming soon, and while I haven't followed college players, well, ever, I'll be sure to write something and provide a few links so we know what our options are. (Thank you, other people, for doing the work I haven't. Though that makes it sound like I'll be stealing your work. No worries, I shan't.)
So, onward: There's more work to be done yet.
