Player of the Month, October 2011

·

Given that I think we're all still a bit sore from that season, and given that we've got more to play still in that wacky post-season format, I thought I'd take a moment and name my player of the month for October, as I'd also like to name a player of the playoffs — and that'll cut into the month a bit. So, without further ado (well, at least not much further ado), let's name him.

It was actually a very easy choice for me, even though we won a grand total of zero matches in October. Perhaps we should start calling it the Owful October, though I fear there would be some pronunciation confusion with the first term there. Anyhow, on with it, eh? He's a player who played all but 10 minutes for the side during October, and that should give it away right there. But that he's done that well is remarkable, given that he's coming off of an injury.

Of course, it's Javier Morales, Playmaker-in-Chief. After coming back at the very end of September, he's made a glorious return, and it's been one of the real positives we can take from the last month. We haven't done particularly well, but we've got him back, and that's enough to name him player of the month.

In October, we've already seen how much we missed him. His touch is sublime, his passing range is unreal, his set piece ability is the stuff Football Manager types dream of. Sure, his comeback still hasn't seem him score a goal, but he's come back to a side that's bereft of confidence — one that can clearly do much better than they have — and he's already looked a class act.

It may not be the comeback we dreamed of, but that he's back on the pitch and nearing full strength only five months on from his horrific leg-break — well, that's simply remarkable. His spirit, fight and determination should lead this team.

And that we've got him now, right as we enter the playoffs, and he's nearing full fitness and starting to look ever more like his old self — why, that's going to be huge. Seattle better watch out. Javier Morales and Kyle Beckerman will be together again, ready to splay their Sounders across the pitch in a glorious display of playoff strength.
