Andy Williams, 34, an RSL original and former Jamaican international, has retired today after his contract with the club expired this season. He will stay on with the club as a coach for the club.
Andy announced his retirement on ESPN700 today on the Bill and Spence show.
"I think I have a lot to offer off the field, bringing in players to make our team better, and hopefully get some more championship rings," he said of his new role with the club.
The attacking midfielder was Real Salt Lake's first selection in the 2004 MLS Expansion Draft and has been with the club since. He was the second signing in club history — Jason Kreis being the first. He scored 14 regular season goals for the club and one playoff goal during that magical run to the 2009 MLS Cup.
His time with the club has seen his family fight through the illness of his wife Marcia, and the club and fans were constantly supportive of the family's struggles.
"I'm glad I came to Salt Lake City," Andy said on ESPN700. "For me and my family to call this home, it's been amazing."
Andy's exit marks the sixth confirmed departure of the off-season thus far.
