RSL victorious over defending champions: Stats and Numbers

·

We're all still buzzing on that win, aren't we? What a comeback that was! It was made even more exciting when, after the fact, I learned that it was the first time in far too long that we'd won after going behind 1-0 — the feeling that we're stronger and more resilient this season gains a bit of credence.

I thought it would be enlightening to run through some statistical impressions today, as there were some very interesting things of note. We've no real news yet on anything, but as Real Week continues, undoubtedly there will be more to say in the build up. If you followed my post-match discussion on Twitter, some of this will not be news.

  • Real Salt Lake. 79 percent passing (392/494). 35 clearances. 16 interceptions. 11/12 tackles won. 13 shots. Three goals. Three points.
  • Sebastian Velasquez. 93% passing, 42/45. Three key passes. Three shots. MLS games under his belt? One. Pro games under his belt? One. Crafted-out goals? One.
  • Kyle Beckerman. 84% passing, 79/94. Nine recoveries. Two interceptions. Two clearances.
  • Wing Wizards. Chris Wingert and Tony Beltran went 80/106 in passing, hitting 78% of passes in the opponent's half. Excluding all crosses, they went 89% in the attacking half.
  • Cut It Out. Jamison Olave and Chris Schuler (Schulave!) had 18 clearances, 10 of which were made in the box.
  • Diamond. The midfield four throughout the match (Beckerman, Grabavoy, Velasquez, Gil, Morales) had 86% passing, with 185/214 passes successful.
  • Clean and Simple. In the attacking half, 81 percent of passes — 211/262 — were successful. To contrast, the Galaxy went 66 percent — 162/244.
  • An Unexpected Comeback. From Michael C. Lewis, Salt Lake Tribune: "The team had gone 0-16-8 in that situation since its historic comeback against FC Dallas on July 24, 2009, including an 0-8-2 mark last season." (The whole piece is well worth a read: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/53694026-77/rsl-season-game-team.html.csp)
  • Settling The Score. From James Edward, @DesNewsReal: "All-time record between LA and RSL in regular season and playoffs now stands at 8-8-5."
  • Hoof and Hope. David Beckham had 47 percent passing, 31/66. He also had 1/16 crosses completed successfully. That's 6 percent. In with the old, out with the new, eh, Galaxy?

Right, that's about all for today. Did you see anything interesting statistically? How about non-statistically? Share your thoughts.
