With three matches left, RSL must play for pride

·

It was a bit odd watching the U.S. Open Cup last night, particularly as it seemed a trophy we had a good chance for (you know, back when our triple — maybe quadruple — was a possibility) but, for reasons we all remember (a collapse against Dallas, anyone?), we got to watch it on television with Seattle and Chicago taking the initiative. I can’t say I’m surprised that Seattle won it all, but if I’m to be frank, that was an awfully boring match for 85 minutes. Anyhow, that aside, it’s rather chilly, isn’t it?

It’s sort of a cold, uninviting metaphor for our season. It was sunny but days ago, and today it is threatening to dump rain all over our peaceful little valleys. I’ve decided to drop on a somewhat indulgent shoegaze album — you know, nice melodies, lots of guitars, obscured vocals, the like — as it seems to fit the metaphor. If you need to ask — well, I suppose my answer wouldn’t be satisfactory anyway.

Right, so on to the reason you’re here: Some nonsense rambling about Real Salt Lake or, well, something like that. Thing is, there’s not a whole lot to report today. We’re nearing the edge of the season and unless the season goes even more topsy-turvy, we’ll end in either second or third place, with Seattle taking the other spot, so our playoff opponent is nearly sealed as well. I suppose the only big question remaining is when our home date will be — a weekend date, I’m sure, would be best for all involved, but at this point, anything sounds good. Our fans, regardless of day of the week, are great, and I’m sure the support will be just as loud and whole-hearted whether or not it all goes down on a Wednesday or a Saturday.

Right, so what do we have to play for the rest of the season? There’s a really simple answer, and I think it can be summed up in a single word: pride. We’ve got that to play for, and if our boys can’t be arsed to at least try for some of that, then I’m not sure what I’ll do. (I kid. I’d probably just write about it and maybe yell. Nothing too over-the-top.)

In all seriousness, there’s a lot of pride left to play for, and every player in our squad must give their all for it. Do we want to be that team that looked so brilliant at the beginning then fell apart? I’d rather we were the team that looked brilliant, had some bumps along the way, and looked brilliant at the end.

I won’t ask that they go out and win the MLS Cup. I won’t ask that we even make the final. Would I like us to? No question, yes. Do I expect us to? Yes, I think so. But will I ask that of them? No. All I ask is that they put the work in on the pitch, pay attention, and play like they’re representing the Claret and Cobalt. If they lose out at the finish line but give everything they’ve got getting there, then I don’t think any of us will have real complaints.

Come on you Claret and Cobalt!
